Violin Power

When I with my husband Woody rambled into video in 1969, we already owned an audio tape recorder. Audio and video in our view was always a parallel, interwoven art material. The eighties were ripe with rumors that the Japanese were collaborating with American software engineers on a unifying interface where a controller, typically a keyboard, could be connected to play another instrument. The name of this phenomena was Musical Instrument Digital Interface or MIDI. Eventually MIDI could interface anything to everything, including our videocassette tape recorder, and in the early nineties we connected my acoustic violin to a “pitch to MIDI” device. It was fun, but limited fun because I could move the tape only a few meters, back and forth or faster and slower. If I however had a laser disc player and MIDI violin, I could with a stroke of the bow jump to various locations, somewhat akin to life editing as a performance.  After performing this way for a few years, I landed in 1996 a co-directorship at STEIM (the studio for electro-instrumental music) in Amsterdam, which in those years was very involved in interfacing MIDI to acoustic instruments. When I arrived, there already was a MIDI/VIDEO software being written by Tom Demeyer, initially named Image/ine and later IMX. In addition to random access, speed and direction, this software gave me a plethora of video effects and memory locations. The clips in my performances are selected as much for the sound as video contend, and are a mix between prepared and improvised play.

Duration: 7:10 min

Glass objects and a candle are placed on a pedestal. A video beam hits the objects straight on and casts their shadows onto the wall behind. The outlines of the objects and the shadow of the smoke from the burning candle interact with an animated shadow of an imaginary ball, which dances from one object to the other. Like a flea, it jumps and flies from one object to the next. As it lands inside a bottle or touches the glass bowl we hear a sound of something knocking against the glass.

Wave-o-Matic
Music Performance Controller

Wave-o-Matic is a music performance controller designed to give you more expressional freedom when playing electronic music live sets. It allows you to control external synthesizers and music software with simple hand gestures. The unique visual appearance and the light feedback of the device give your performance a visual style that really engages you and your audience. Wave-o-Matic works with five ultrasonic sensors detecting user hand movements and gestures.

Tommi Koskinen is a musician, sound designer and media artist from Helsinki, Finland. His background is in computer science, media technology and design and he currently studies in the Sound in New Media MA program in MediaLab of Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture. Tommi’s artistic work consists of installations and physical device design to experimental electronic music live performances with Kitkaliitto, and the driving force is his love for sound and storytelling.

A Sounding

A sounding is a visual monument for sound. To create a sounding, movements of the performer are translated into sound and image with the help of an infrared camera and an infrared pen. The performer can draw music upon an imaginary canvas (or a real one). When the sound has faded away we are left with a sounding representing the history of the performance.

      Eftir að hafa lokið B.A.-prófi í heimspeki frá Háskóla Íslands flutti Ragnar Helgi til Frakklands þar sem hann lagði fyrst stund á nám í kvikmyndagerð í París en snéri sér síðan að myndlist. Hann útskrifaðist frá l’Ecole des Beaux Arts d’Aix-en-Provence vorið 2001. Eftir að hafa gert stuttar leiknar kvikmyndir og hreyfimyndir vinnur Ragnar Helgi nú mest með tölvur og forritun í virkum hljóð- og videóinnsetningum og netlistaverkum. Ragnar Helgi hefur nýlega sýnt í: KIASMA: The Museum of Contemporary Art (Helsinki), Museet for Samtidskunst (Danmörku), Listasafni Íslands (Reykjavík), STEIM-gallery (Amsterdam), Nýló – The Living Art Museum (Reykjavík), Möbius International (Montréal, Kanada) og í Hafnarhúsi – Listasafni Reykjavíkur (Reykjavík).

      an audio/video performance extension from ” Little Solar System ”

      The Little Solarsystem is an audiovisual performance originated by focusing on the rhythmical signals produced by our own little solar system. Taking the speed of time, signals and the location of the present, using human body controllers gives the experiment a view on another dimension. Hard facts are mixed with fantasy. As a work in progress based project, things can go to unexpected galaxies. The Little Solar system is prepared. Might there be a change to see and hear enlighten dark matter ?

      RAFLOST 2012!

      The RAFLOST festival is approaching.  This time the festival will be starting on the 19th of May and ending on the 26th.

      Our main guest this year will be one of the pioneers of electronic arts, Steina Vasulkahttp://www.vasulka.org ).  Her performance will be in collaboration with the Reykjavik Arts Festival ( http://www.listahatid.is/ ).

      Also, the Raflosti workshop (21-25.may) will be held in collaboration with the Iceland Academy of the Arts ( http://lhi.is/ ).

      Since the program is not finalized yet, there is still time to send in proposals for performances and lectures.  If you are interested, please send mail to raflost@raflost.is

      RAFLOST is open to all art forms, but since the festival is only one week long and is using many different venues, there is limited time and space for fixed installations.

       

      Dennis H. Miller

      Echoing Spaces (2009) is an nine-minute composition for single-channel video and stereo audio. The work explores a number of virtual environments in which the primary elements recur (echo) both in immediate succession and at different times throughout the piece, always in varied form. The visual imagery employs a number of similarly shaped elements that appear in overlapping, morphing configurations, and the restricted color palette helps maintain a focus on the primary objects. The music of Echoing Shapes was created using a variety of modern techniques including convolution and physical modeling. The quasi-tonal context adds an additional layer of continuity to the work.


      Dennis Miller is currently on the faculty of Northeastern University in Boston where he teaches courses in electronic music and mixed-media composition.  Miller is the founder and artistic director of the Visual Music Marathon (www.2009vmm.neu.edu), an ongoing program that includes screenings of works by filmmakers from around the world. His music and artworks are available at www.dennismiller.neu.edu.

      Getting closer

      RAFLOST+Pikslaverk 2011 is approaching.  We received quite many proposals for art works in different forms and have done our best to facilitate as much as we can.  The scheduled program will be released soon.

      The main events will be taking place in the Iceland Academy of the Arts (Sölvhólsgata 13) and the industrial space Grandaskáli (Grandagarði 18).  Also, on saturday the 7th, there will be an open workshop in Hafnarhúsið, Reykjavík Art Museum (Tryggvagata 17) hosted by LornaLab ( http://reykjavikmedialab.is/ ) .

      RAFLOST 2011 – Call for participants

      RAFLOST  will again join up with PIKSLAVERK (a part of the Pixelache Network) to organize the 2011 version of RAFLOST. The festival will be held in various spaces in Reykjavik on the 5th – 8th of May 2011.

      We are calling for works of electronic art in a broad sense, be it video,
      sound/sonic-art, performance art or whatever you can think of, as long as it is electronic in some sense. Preference will be given to works that have a live/interactive factor and/or that are a hybrid of two or more art forms. Also, due to the changing spaces, any kind of installation can only be exhibited for a few hours at the most.

      We also welcome presentations and lectures on related subjects.
